Bachelor of Design in Interdisciplinary Digital Studio (iDS)

Digital technologies have been embraced by artists and designers in all areas, expanding our capabilities to communicate and express far beyond traditional 2-D and 3-D media. Beyond simply enhancing speed and accuracy, their use is bringing transformational change to the arts and design disciplines now free from physical constraints and to the traditional boundaries between those disciplines. The Bachelor of Design in Interdisciplinary Digital Studio (iDS) prepares students to explore, critically appraise, and further push the boundaries of how emerging technologies are used.

The iDS program is a four-year curriculum organized around a series of interdisciplinary studio courses. Students participate in the art and design curriculum of the School of Visual Arts Foundation Program to obtain grounding in the historical and theoretical context of digital art and design, as well as to develop skills in visual communication and creative exploration. iDS studios enable students to immerse themselves in the application of arrays of digital tools to problem-solving in art and design, and as they advance through the program, projects become increasingly student-directed, culminating in a year-long independent capstone project. The program is designed to help prepare graduates either for professional careers or for advanced study. The curriculum develops both the creative disciplines and the skills essential to practice and to pursue interests in related fields. Enrollment in the iDS major is limited to University Park.

This iDS Program is part of the Penn State School of Visual Arts
a division of the College of Arts and Architecture
